The black bear is the smallest of the three North American bears species, the other two being the grizzly and polar bear.

The weight of black bears vary considerably. Adult females seldom reach 300 lbs, but males weighing over 700 pounds have been recorded.

Bear cubs are relatively undeveloped and small at birth, being only about eight inches in length. Two is the average litter size but three are more common than one.

Black bears breed in late May until July and the young are born in the winter den. Black bears are a very smart animal whose eye sight is poor, but their sense of smell and hearing is excellent. Black bears see in color and have good vision close-up.
